Tiny home office corner: desk sizes and ergonomics
Set up a work corner in 1-2 m²: desk width and depth, chair clearance, screen distance, light and cable tips for small apartments.
Working from a corner of the living room or bedroom is normal now, but most corner desks end up as a laptop on the dining table. A dedicated work spot, even a very small one, helps both your back and your evenings: when you leave the corner, the working day is over. Here is how to fit one into 1-2 square metres.
How much space do you need?
- Desk: at least 80 cm wide for a laptop only; 100-120 cm for a laptop plus an external monitor. Depth of 50-60 cm is enough for a laptop; 60-70 cm if you use a monitor, so it can sit far enough away.
- Chair clearance: about 70-90 cm behind the desk edge so you can push back and stand up.
- Total footprint: roughly 1 x 1.4 m for a compact setup.
Find the right spot
The best spots in a small home:
- Beside a window, with the window to your side rather than behind the screen (glare) or behind you (reflections).
- An alcove or the space beside a wardrobe.
- The end of a hallway if it is wide enough (at least 140 cm including walkway).
- Behind the sofa, facing the wall, in a living room that is deep enough.
Avoid facing the bed if you can. In a studio, use an open shelf or the back of the sofa to separate the desk from the sleep zone.
Ergonomics in a small space
- Desk height: standard desks are 72-75 cm. Your elbows should be at about 90 degrees with relaxed shoulders. Tall people may need a higher desk or adjustable legs; shorter people often need a footrest.
- Screen: top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away (50-70 cm). A laptop stand plus a separate keyboard and mouse is the cheapest upgrade.
- Chair: choose one that fits under the desk when you are done. Armrests that do not fit under the tabletop push the chair into the room.
Desk types for small spaces
- Compact desks with a shelf or drawer: good if you need storage.
- Tabletop on legs or trestles: flexible, easy to move when you relocate.
- Height-adjustable small desks: useful for children or shared desks.
- Wall-mounted or drop-leaf desks: the smallest footprint, but require drilling.
Storage without crowding
Keep only what you use weekly on or next to the desk. A narrow drawer unit on castors slides under the desk; hanging organizers in a wardrobe hold paper and cables; a single shelf above the desk keeps the surface clear. Boxes in matching colours make open storage look calm.
Light
Daylight from the side is best. In the evening, use a work lamp with an adjustable arm placed on the side opposite your writing hand, aimed at the desk rather than the screen. A neutral light of around 3,000-4,000 K helps focus during work hours; switch to warm room light when you finish.
Cables
A small desk with visible cables looks chaotic. Use one power strip fixed under the desk with adhesive clips, a cable tray or a basket, and velcro ties. Route charger cables down a desk leg.
Ending the work day in a small home
In a small home it helps to "close" the office: put the laptop in a drawer or box, switch off the desk lamp, slide the chair under the desk. Some people throw a cloth over the monitor. It sounds small, but it separates work from home when they share a room.
A sample setup in 1.2 x 1.4 m
- Desk 100 x 60 cm beside the window.
- Chair that slides fully under the desk.
- Laptop stand, keyboard and mouse.
- Work lamp on the left (for a right-handed person).
- Drawer unit or organizer under the desk.
Common mistakes
A desk too shallow for a monitor, so the screen is too close. A big office chair that does not fit under the desk. Working with the window directly behind the screen. And letting the desk become a storage surface for everything in the apartment.
Checklist
- Desk width matched to your setup (80 cm laptop, 100-120 cm with monitor).
- 70-90 cm chair clearance.
- Window to the side.
- Screen at eye level, arm's length away.
- Work lamp opposite your writing hand.
- A routine to close the office.
